November 3-4 - Apple
Tree Bazaar

The
Art Guild had a single booth this year, but was able to move up front
between Pat Blackwell (photo at upper left) and The Harrison Center
(where Betty Schwartz and Jean & Rose Larkie were
working, photo at right). Sue Young also had a booth nearby
(photo
at lower left). We had a lot of traffic, several good membership prospects, and
such nice neighbors! Thanks go to Linda & Gil Morales for loaning
us their lattice panels.

Gloria
Meadows did well, selling most of her painted rocks (photo at upper
left). Rose Jacobson and Nancy Cagle sold just enough to pay their
share of the booth costs (but not their materials costs), (photos at
right). And Bill & Judy Franklin enjoyed visiting, but lost money
(photo at lower left)While Gloria's rocks sold well, they didn't provide
much
return
on the time invested. As a result, Gloria announced that she was
out
of the painted rock business, and sold her display rack. Since the
others didn't sell much, the chances of getting people to chip in for a
booth next year are slim.

To
maintain a presence at Apple Tree, the association may have to cover the
booth cost and hope for enough in commissions to cover a good part of
the cost. This year's commissions, plus $5 that Pat Blackwell gave
us for letting her use one panel of our lattice, was enough to pay for
over half of the $50 cost. We will have to decide whether the
publicity is worth the cost next year.
November 5 - Jean Blackwell - Handmade Greeting Cards
and Gift Tags

You'd
better watch out, Jean Blackwell is coming to the Art Guild! And just in
time to help us make holiday greeting cards and gift tags. She'll be
there with lots of materials and lots of ideas for making cards that
any artist would be proud to send, but that anyone can make. Some
examples are shown here. Come prepared for paint and glue. Old clothes
or an apron would be good. If you have any watercolor pencils, Jean
specifically asked that you bring them along. You might also want to
bring a few old greeting cards that can be recycled, or perhaps a
favorite pair of scissors. But you need not bring anything. Jean will
bring enough to go around.
Remember
that first time visitors are free, and our regular dues are only $2 a
month. Since there is only one month left in
this year, anyone can join for a paltry $2. So bring friends along.
Maybe they will want to join for next year. We'll be meeting at our
usual time and place, 2 p.m. at the Waco Charter
School,
615 N. 25th Street. Refreshments and conversation at 1:30 p.m. Officer
elections will be on the agenda at 2 p.m., and the program will start
soon thereafter. Also, please bring some recent art for Show & Tell at
the break. It's always fun to see what others are doing.
November 5 - Jean
Blackwell - Card Making

Jean
Blackwell brought loads of materials for us to use. She also
brought three assistants: her daughter, Cara, her daughter-in-law,
Susan, and Susan's friend, Joan. With Jean leading and the others
helping, we learned to make several kinds of very attractive, hand-made
cards.
One
style began with making an irregular border by tearing painters' tape
lengthwise and taping it around the edges of the card with the torn
edges forming a frame. The area inside this frame was painted with
a blending of several colors of shiny acrylic paint. Then a stamp
was used to make a pattern with embossing ink on top of the dried
acrylic.
While the embossing ink was still wet, a waxy powder was poured over it,
sticking to the ink. A heat gun was then used to melt the powder,
in which bits of glitter were embedded. The tape was removed, and
the area under it was lightly brushed with paint to keep it from being a
dead white.
Another
style was made by painting a stamp with watercolor crayons, and
transferring this to a blank card.
This
image could be further painted or penciled to add details or introduce
other colors. A third style was a collage made by gluing several
shapes, which Jean had prepared in advance, to form a scene. Some
examples are shown at the sides. Rose Larkie and Rose Jacobson
brought additional stamps and other materials, and shared them with us
also.
Thanks, Jean for
your expertise and all of the materials that you shared with us.
Thanks also to Gloria Meadows, Christine Niekamp, and jean Larkie for
bringing refreshments, and to those who brought paintings for Show and
Tell, samples of which are below. Welcome to new (actually
returning) member Dorothy DeVries. We're glad to have you back!

November 9-December 6 - Art Guild Exhibit at MCC
There will be no
theme. You may submit up to three works, each of which must
measure at least 16" x 20" (to discourage theft). Only hanging
art can be accepted. We hope to hang at least one work from
each member artist.
Please deliver art to the Ball Performing Arts
Center between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov 9. At 4 p.m.,
an MCC art professor will critique the art and select the works to
be hung. You are encouraged to bring your art, stay for the
critique, and take any unselected art home with you.
If you cannot come to MCC on Nov 9, some members
have volunteered to accept your art at the Sunday Nov 5 meeting,
with the understanding that you will agree to pick up unselected art
from the transporter.
The exhibit ends Wednesday, Dec 6. Please
pick up your art between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. If you cannot do
so, make arrangements for someone else to do so, or you will be
charged a fine of $5 per item. Please read the rules at the
bottom of this page.
McLennan Community College - November
9-December 6
Fourteen members entered paintings, and most of them
brought their paintings to MCC and stayed for the selection and critique
by David Zdrazil of the MCC art department. The paintings were
lined up along the wall, grouped by artist. David went down the
line picking his favorite of each artist and relating what he liked
about it. Since we had room to hang about 30 paintings, he was
then asked to fill out the exhibit with other picks. He chose to
pick a second painting from each artist, bringing the total to 28.
Told that we could fit a couple more, he chose the third paintings from
Rose Jacobson and Sue Young.
The 30 works chosen are below in three long strips:
the left hand ten, the middle ten, and the right hand ten. For a
better look, drop by and see them in the foyer of the Ball Performing
Arts Center at MCC. They show best in the evening, so come for a double
treat by attending one of the events there. Many are free, and
none is expensive. Check the Trib or the MCC web site for
possibilities. We can be proud of the show, thanks to all those
who submitted entries. Note the sign and box of brochures at
either end. The brochures list the artists, titles and prices.
They also provide information about the Art Guild and our dues.
